09/19/2007 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ronnie Belliard's three-run go-ahead homer highlighted a five-run fifth inning, as Washington defeated the struggling New York Mets, 9-8, at RFK Stadium.
Belliard ended 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Austin Kearns homered, drove in two and scored twice for the Nationals, who have won the first two games of this three-game set. D'Angelo Jimenez also homered and Nook Logan went 2-for-5 with two runs scored for Washington, which has won three of four.
Shawn Green homered for the second straight game and ended 3-for-4, but the Mets pitching staff again allowed a four-run lead slip away, as New York has lost five straight.
Paul Lo Duca and Endy Chavez both drove in a pair of runs for the Mets, who have lost six of seven and saw their lead in the NL East fall to 1 1/2 games over the Phillies, who defeated St. Louis in 14 innings late Tuesday night.
New York starting pitcher John Maine (14-10) suffered the loss, his fifth in six decisions. The right-hander allowed eight runs on 11 hits, striking out six and walking two, over 4 1/3 innings. He couldn't contain the Nationals offense after New York got off to a 4-0 lead after the first inning and carried a 7-3 advantage into the deciding fifth frame.
The Mets rallied in the ninth against Washington closer Chad Cordero. After Cordero struck out Carlos Beltran and retired Lastings Milledge on a liner to left, Green started the two-out rally with a single. Lo Duca followed with a single and was lifted for pinch-runner Carlos Gomez. Jeff Conine then singled to center to score Green to make it a 9-8 contest.
Cordero, though, rebounded to strike out pinch-hitter Ruben Gotay after falling behind 3-0 to start the at-bat.
The save was the 35th of the season for Cordero, which moved him into sole possession of second place on the Nationals/Expos all-time saves list with 126.
Washington reliever Jesus Colome (5-1) got the win with one inning of perfect relief.
New York's Moises Alou went 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 22 games, but he left the game in the fifth inning with tightness in his left quadriceps muscle.
Similar to Monday night's game the Mets got going first, but also like the opener the Nationals came storming back.
In the first, David Wright doubled home the first run and scored when Beltran followed with a base hit off Washington starter John Hanrahan. Beltran later scored on a Lo Duca sacrifice fly and Chavez made it 4-0 with a base hit to plate Alou.
Kearns cut the deficit to three runs in the second with a homer, but Green restored the four-run advantage in the third with his homer.
In the bottom of the inning, Logan scored on Felipe Lopez's sacrifice fly to make it a three-run game. Then in the fourth, Brian Schneider singled home Belliard to make it a 5-3 contest.
New York responded in the fifth with an RBI double by Lo Duca and a run- scoring single by Chavez, but Washington exploded in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
Wily Mo Pena singled home Logan with the first run of the frame and Kearns followed with an RBI single before Belliard put the Nationals ahead 8-7 with his three-run blast to left.
Jimenez then made it a two-run game in favor of the Nats, 9-7, with a solo homer in the sixth.
Hanrahan allowed five runs on seven hits in three innings.

He has appealed the suspension...Alou's hitting streak is his longest since having a 23-gamer in 2001 when with the Astros...The two runs by the Mets in the fifth inning came off reliever Winston Abreu, ending the Nationals streak of 12 1/3 innings of scoreless relief by the bullpen...After committing 10 errors in two games, the Mets didn't commit an error in this game...Cordero moved past Ugeth Urbina's 125 saves for second on the all-time franchise list.
